All Day Jeep Tour/ Sleep Under Stars

If you are looking for an exclusive experience, then consider our All Day Jeep tour combined with a night of wild camping in the Wadi Rum Protected Area. Sleep with the stars above your head, and the soft sand beneath your mattress. The ultimate immersion in nature; wild camping in Wadi Rum offers a unique experience and one which you’ll fondly remember for years.

Later, when we were often riding inland, my mind used to turn me from the direct road,
to clear my senses by a night in Rumm and by the ride down its dawn-lit valley towards the shining plains,
or up its valley in the sunset towards that glowing square which my timid anticipation never let me reach.
I would say, ‘Shall I ride on this time, beyond the Khazail, and know it all?’

But in truth I liked Rumm too much.

Program

We recommend arriving around 9.30/10.30 am depending on the time of year. On booking, we give you directions for meeting up. This tour should always start in the morning, after arriving in Wadi Rum, or you could make it a two-night one-day tour by spending the first night in Wadi Rum at our main camp. Adding an extra night would increase the cost.

Once we meet we will have an informal chat and glass of Bedouin tea together at my house in Rum Village. I (Sulieman) will introduce you to your guide for the day and when you're ready you will head off into the desert for your Jeep tour adventure.

During the tour you will visit the following sites:

  • Lawrence Spring - Our first stop takes you to Abu Ainah a natural spring now named after Lawrence of Arabia. The spring water is still used for grazing animals. Look out for camels who arrive to help themselves (they are not wild they have owners). You can give your legs a workout and walk for about 20 minutes up the side of the mountain. Here you can see the spring’s source and enjoy excellent views across the valley. This spring is one of 4 springs in a row along the mountains here which used to be the only source of spring water for miles around. There are also inscriptions here on a massive 'cheese-shaped' rock at the foot of the mountain.

  • Khazali Canyon - Khazali is a dramatic mountain made up of a steep gnarly and crevassed red sandstone base topped with smoother rounded yellow sandstone. At Khazali you can visit and walk inside a dramatic canyon. Inscriptions can be seen on the canyon walls and you can see how water erosion has shaped the mountain. At the natural end of the canyon, you may find a small pool with some hidden water. This is another reminder of the past and how local Bedouins used to rely on hidden rainwater catchments like this one. This mountain has also played an important role in providing shady spots even in the heat of summer when the sun is at its highest point in the sky. Look out for the old false fig tree entwined with a sandstone rock at the entrance to the canyon.

  • Little Bridge - Wadi Rum is full of fantastic rock formations and Little Bridge is one example. Here a little Bridge has formed as wind and water wore away the sandstone. This bridge is easy to climb onto and in a great spot for photos as the landscape surrounding the formation is spectacular.

  • Big Red Sand Dunes - At these huge sand dunes of red sand piled up against the mountain you can find your inner child again. By all means, climb for the view. But don't forget to run, and jump on the way down. Fast fact: These dunes can be seen in the movie Transformers Revenge of the Fallen. Although in the film the story goes that they are in Egypt.

  • Anfisheyh Inscriptions - On the side of the Anfisheyh mountain you can see a range of Nabataean and Thamudic inscriptions carved into the rocks. They date back to the 4th century. Said to be located on the old camel caravan route through the area, these inscriptions were perhaps left to guide those traveling through. There are 20,000 inscriptions recorded within Wadi Rum (plus another 25,000 rock carvings) but the inscriptions at Anfisheyh are some of the most visible when it comes to location.

  • A Bedouin-style lunch break to suit the season (the exact position of lunch on the agenda may vary)

  • Lawrence House - This is another example of a site named after Lawrence of Arabia. However, the house itself is much older and there is no evidence Lawrence came to this location. An archaeological site the ‘house’ itself is Nabataean and was probably an outpost used when the Nabataeans controlled trade routes between Petra and Mecca in Saudi Arabia. Pay attention to the large sandstone blocks, you can see they were cut by hand. Don't miss turning around for the views. It's no accident there's an outpost here.

  • Mushroom Rock formation * - This fascinating rock formation was carved by the wind and water over many many many years. This a great opportunity for a striking photo.

  • Viewpoint to Burdah Arch - At this quick stop we point out the Burdah Rock Arch located high at the top of the Burdah mountain. Extend your tour: If you're adventurous consider adding the scrambling 2-3 hour hike to your Wadi Rum experience (must be booked in advance).

  • A short walk through a natural canyon - Stretch your legs and enjoy a short walk through a beautiful natural canyon. A short easy scramble is involved at the highest point.

  • Um Frouth Arch - The highlight of many people's visit to Wadi Rum, this elegantly formed natural rock bridge can be climbed for those all-important photo ops.

  • Cow Stone/ Chicken Rock formation * - This strange rock formation has legs … You decide. Is it a chicken with an egg or a cow? Also, handily located for beautiful views.

  • Wild Camping - Your guide will choose and prepare a special place deep inside the protected area of Wadi Rum for you to spend the night. We set up a fire, mattresses, and all the supplies you need for the night under the stars. Drift off to sleep while you try to spot shooting stars. This night in nature will be a night to remember for the rest of your life.

  • Sunset - No trip to Wadi Rum would be complete without taking the time to sit, soak up the views and watch the sunset. Enjoy.

In the morning, you will enjoy breakfast and Bedouin tea made for you on the fire. Then, we will bring you back to the village by Jeep.
